Summary

Model year 2021 or later. Arm swings out from the bumper.

The bill requires school buses from model year 2021 or later to carry a crossing arm on the front bumper that swings out so students crossing in front of the bus stay at a safe distance. It touches school districts, charter schools and bus drivers, who must turn the arm on along with the flashing lights whenever the bus stops to load or unload children. The equipment rule starts September 1, 2026, and districts and charters may take gifts, grants and donations from any source to pay for it starting September 1, 2025.
