Summary

The charge can rise to whatever the Legislature appropriates.

The bill removes the $30 million yearly cap on the assessment the state charges certain insurers to fund the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, so the charge can rise to match whatever the Legislature appropriates from the fund. It touches the insurers that pay the assessment and the volunteer fire departments that draw on the fund. On the ground, insurers could pay more each year, and at least 10 percent of the fund's yearly appropriations must go to departments in areas the state rates as high risk for large wildfires, with any unused share released for other requests.
