Agencies already must collect. Money shows up only if lawmakers fund it.
The bill orders the Department of Public Safety to create a grant program that helps local law enforcement agencies pay for taking DNA samples from people booked after a felony arrest. It touches police and sheriff's offices that already must collect these samples under existing law, and anyone arrested for a felony. On the ground, agencies could get state grant money for DNA collection, but only if lawmakers fund it, starting September 1, 2025.
