Summary

“Controlled Substance Overdose,” with the drug named when possible.

The bill requires death certificates to say "Controlled Substance Overdose", and name the drug when possible, when a toxicology test finds a lethal amount of a controlled substance other than fentanyl-type drugs and the autopsy matches an overdose. It keeps the existing rule that fentanyl-type deaths are labeled "Fentanyl Poisoning" or "Fentanyl Toxicity." Medical certifiers filling out death certificates must use the new label for deaths that occur or are discovered on or after September 1, 2025.
