Summary

New account, with TEA handing money to districts running pre-K.

The bill creates a new dedicated account in state general revenue called the Texas prekindergarten fund, filled by appropriations, dedicated revenue, interest and gifts. The Texas Education Agency must hand out money from the fund to school districts and charter schools that run pre-K, weighted toward disadvantaged, low-income, rural and high-performing programs. The agency must also report each year on where the money went and what it did, and the commissioner writes the rules.
