relating to the approval of purchases under the supplemental
special education services and instructional materials program by a
public school student's admission, review, and dismissal
committee.
Account money buys only what the student’s admission, review, and dismissal committee approves. Families lose open choice.
The bill says money in a student's account under the state's supplemental special education services and instructional materials program can be spent only on services and materials approved by the student's admission, review, and dismissal committee. Before grant money goes into a student's account, that committee must meet with the parent, decide which services and materials would best serve the student, and give the approved list to the parent and the agency. Families in the program lose open choice over these purchases, and school special education committees gain a gatekeeping role starting with the 2025-2026 school year.
