Up to a $20 cap. The new group has no population limit.
The bill changes which counties may raise an optional extra fee that local governments add to vehicle registration, up to a $20 cap. It keeps the existing option for counties described in subsection (a)(1) with fewer than 700,000 people and adds counties described in subsection (a)(2), with no population limit on that group. In those newly covered counties, the commissioners court may call a local election, and if a majority of voters approve, drivers would pay the higher registration fee.
