Summary

Class A misdemeanor becomes third-degree felony, on store property.

The bill raises the penalty for simple assault causing bodily injury from a Class A misdemeanor to a third-degree felony when the victim is someone the attacker knows works for a retail establishment. It covers retail employees while they are on store property, including land and buildings the store owns or leases. Starting September 1, 2025, assaults on store workers carry felony exposure, the same treatment current law already gives hospital staff, security officers and process servers.
