Summary

Pets scheduled for euthanasia skip the sterilization chapter once adopted.

This bill adds a new exemption to the state law that requires dogs and cats adopted from shelters and other releasing agencies to be sterilized. A dog or cat that the agency has scheduled for euthanasia, and that a new owner then adopts, no longer falls under that sterilization chapter. Shelters and adopters can move these animals out without the spay or neuter requirement starting September 1, 2025, even in cities with stricter local sterilization ordinances.
