relating to the eligibility of a service member or veteran of the
United States armed forces to participate in a veterans treatment
court program based on citizenship status.
Qualifies for the program but not a U.S. citizen? Still gets in.
The bill bars veterans treatment court programs from limiting or denying access to a veteran or service member solely because of citizenship status. It touches non-citizen veterans and service members charged in Texas courts, and the counties and courts that run these programs. On the ground, a veteran who otherwise qualifies for the program cannot be turned away just for not being a U.S. citizen, starting September 1, 2025.
