Bill text, introduced version (I)

The bill creates a new state council of 13 appointed members, lets it hire one part-time employee, reimburses members for expenses and directs funding by appropriation to the Department of Agriculture. The caption does not promise less government, so the pattern fires at moderate strength.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

SECTION 1. Title 2, Agriculture Code, is amended by adding

Chapter 24 to read as follows:

locally funded program to provide free or reduced-price meals to

each eligible student.

Sec. 24.002. ESTABLISHMENT. The School Meals Council is

established to study issues regarding public school meal programs

and make recommendations to address those issues.

Sec. 24.003. COMPOSITION. (a) The council is composed of

the following 13 members, who must have an interest in public school

Sec. 24.004. TERMS; VACANCY. (a) A member of the council

serves a two-year term.

(b) A member of the council may be reappointed to another

agency;

(7) research other matters concerning public school

meal programs as necessary; and

by this Act.

(b) Notwithstanding Section 24.011, Agriculture Code, as

added by this Act, the School Meals Council shall submit the initial

report required under that section not later than November 1, 2026.
