Summary

Standards at least as strict as DPS’s.

The bill requires every city, county and other local law enforcement agency to adopt physical fitness standards for its peace officers that are at least as strict as the Department of Public Safety's standards, and to test each officer against them every year. Officers who fail must join a diet and exercise program, which the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement must create and offer, until they meet the standard. Local police and sheriff's departments take on a new annual testing duty starting September 1, 2026, and state troopers are not covered by this new section.
