Summary

Any interested person, news media included, can sue. Courts may award fees.

The bill lets any interested person, including news media, sue for a court declaration on whether a government body followed the Open Meetings Act or what that law means. It also lets a records requestor or the attorney general sue for a declaration on whether a government body followed the Public Information Act, including disputes over cost estimates and requests for attorney general rulings. Courts may award costs and attorney's fees in these suits, so citizens and reporters get a clearer path to challenge secrecy without first waiting for a records denial.
