Summary

Up from 10, in counties of 2 million to 3.3 million.

This bill lets the sheriff in a county with more than 2 million and up to 3.3 million people pull up to 18 jobs out of the sheriff's department civil service system, instead of the current limit of 10. It touches sheriffs, chief and major deputies, department lawyers, and other top staff in those large counties, along with the civil service protections those jobs would otherwise carry. On the ground, sheriffs in that population band can hand-pick nearly twice as many senior positions outside civil service rules starting September 1, 2025, while counties of 2 million or fewer keep the cap of 10.
