Summary

Class A assault convictions against dating partners count.

The bill widens the existing five-year firearm ban for people convicted of Class A misdemeanor assault against someone close to them. It now covers assaults against dating partners as well as family and household members, by pointing to the Family Code's definitions of those relationships. A person convicted of assaulting a dating partner would commit an offense by possessing a firearm within five years of release from jail or community supervision, for offenses on or after September 1, 2025.
