Summary

Constables get at least $65,000 and traffic-stop deputies $45,000 before raises or new gear.

The bill rewrites the state grant that helps smaller counties pay their constables, setting fixed grants of $75,000, $100,000 or $150,000 per constable precinct by county size, and drops the old rule that a county had to put up at least 75 percent of the salary money. It touches counties of 300,000 people or fewer, their constables and the deputy constables who make traffic stops, with the comptroller paying out money the Legislature sets aside for the program. On the ground, grant money must first bring constables to at least $65,000 and traffic-stop deputies to at least $45,000, and only then can it go to raises, new deputies or staff, vehicles, firearms and safety gear.
