Summary

Caption: 12-month registrations. Bill: cited drivers pay back fees on top of the 20% surcharge.

The bill makes every Texas vehicle registration last a full 12 months and bars the state from issuing shorter registration periods. Drivers who register late now start a fresh 12-month period from the month they register, and if they have no good reason for being late they pay a back fee for each month or part of a month the vehicle went unregistered. Drivers cited or arrested for an expired registration pay that back fee on top of the existing 20 percent extra charge, starting with registrations applied for on or after September 1, 2025.
