Summary

One credit can replace world geography or world history.

The bill adds ethnic studies to the list of social studies subjects every Texas school district must offer as part of its required core curriculum. It also lets high school students count one credit of ethnic studies, in place of world geography or world history, toward the three social studies credits needed to graduate. The new graduation option applies to students who start ninth grade in the 2026-2027 school year or later, and the law itself takes effect right away with a two-thirds vote or on September 1, 2025.
