Summary

Newcomers too. Make, model, serial number and a fee. Skip it, Class C misdemeanor.

The bill makes Texans who get a gun on or after January 1, 2026, and new residents who move in with guns, register each firearm with the Department of Public Safety within 30 days. It touches every new gun buyer and every gun-owning newcomer, who must give their name, birth details, addresses, ID number, the gun's make, model, caliber and serial number, and the previous owner's name and address, and must pay a fee. DPS builds and runs a statewide gun registry, and failing to register becomes a Class C misdemeanor offense starting January 1, 2026.
