Summary
Must becomes may. Lighter actions allowed too.
The bill changes the rule for a public school campus rated unacceptable for five straight years, so the education commissioner may, instead of must, take over the district with a board of managers or close the campus. It also lets the commissioner pick any lighter action already allowed under another section of the accountability law. School districts with long-failing campuses could keep their elected boards and keep those campuses open, because the state's mandatory takeover-or-closure trigger becomes optional.
