Bill text, introduced version (I)

A handgun license holder can still carry into these facilities unless the home posts or gives the required notice, so the handgun ban depends on the facility acting. Unlicensed carriers and other weapons stay covered, so the promise is only partly defeated.

Summary

Exempt unless the home gives “effective notice”. Everyone else risks a Class A misdemeanor.

The bill, called Joshua's Act, adds state-licensed intermediate care facilities, state supported living centers, and small licensed group homes serving people with intellectual or developmental disabilities to the list of places where carrying a firearm, location-restricted knife, club, or prohibited weapon is an offense. It touches residents and staff of these homes and anyone who brings a weapon onto their premises, and it makes the new offense a Class A misdemeanor. People licensed to carry a handgun are exempt unless the facility gives them the legal notice that bans carry, and the change starts September 1, 2025.
