Summary

True catfish only. Swai and Pangasius need not apply.

The bill lets Texas restaurants and other food service establishments call a menu item catfish only if it is true catfish from the family Ictaluridae, and not Swai, Pangasius or similar imported look-alikes. A restaurant selling a catfish-like fish that is not catfish must not call it catfish and must clearly name the actual fish on its menu or menu board. The state health department, local health districts and counties can fine violators up to $250, $500 or $750 per day based on food sales, and government attorneys can sue for matching civil penalties starting September 1, 2025.
