relating to emergency detention by a paramedic of certain persons with mental illness for preliminary examination at a mental health facility.
Caption from analyzed text · version I.
Summary
No warrant or peace officer needed for the emergency exam trip.
The bill lets a licensed paramedic detain a person who appears to have a mental illness and poses a substantial risk of serious harm, and take that person to a mental health facility for an emergency exam without a warrant or a peace officer. It covers paramedics whose medical director has specifically authorized them, the people they detain regardless of age, and the mental health facilities and hospital emergency rooms that receive them. On the ground, paramedics must file a set notification form, facilities must accept and hold the person on that form alone, and the change applies to detentions that begin on or after September 1, 2025.
