Summary

Officers see speech, hearing or autism. Other details stay barred from sharing.

The bill changes the vehicle registration form, where drivers can voluntarily flag a health condition or disability that may make it hard to communicate with a police officer. It lets more kinds of providers, such as speech-language pathologists, audiologists and occupational therapists, verify that condition, and it requires the state motor vehicle department to tell the Department of Public Safety whether the condition is a speech or language impairment, a hearing impairment, or autism spectrum disorder. On the ground, officers looking up a flagged registration would see the broad category of condition, while other details about the condition stay barred from sharing.
